About Westerlay Orchids Westerlay Orchids is a family-owned horticultural company based in Carpinteria, California. Founded in 1978 by Joop “Joe” and Lucy Overgaag after emigrating from the Netherlands, the business began as Westerlay Roses, specializing in cut roses. Facing growing international competition, the company shifted its focus in the early 2000s, first to cymbidiums and later to phalaenopsis orchids, eventually rebranding as Westerlay Orchids. Today, under the leadership of Joe’s son, Toine Overgaag, the company operates approximately 800,000 square feet of greenhouse space and produces more than four million orchids annually for retail and wholesale markets. With a workforce of 180 employees, Westerlay emphasizes sustainability, community involvement, and the production of long-lasting orchids.
