About
About University of Oregon Reality Lab (OR Lab) The Oregon Reality Lab (OR Lab) is an interdisciplinary research and development space within the University of Oregon's School of Journalism and Communication. Based in Portland, the Silicon Forest, lab researchers, students, and industry collaborators work together to explore the prosocial, pro-environmental, and business implications and applications of spatial computing platforms like augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR). Come by our booth and explore some of our ongoing spatial storytelling projects:Beneath the Surface: Otter Rock Marine ReserveThe OR Lab is working with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) to leverage wearable AR to engage audiences with their Marine Reserves. Leveraging the latest in wearable AR hardware - Snap Spectacles - the OR Lab is creating location-based AR experiences for the Otter Rock Marine Reserve. Learn how we are using the latest spatial storytelling techniques to bring the hidden story of our oceans above water. Eagle Creek: Fully ImmersedIn spring of 2018, our Portland-based Multimedia Journalism masterâs students reported on the aftermath of the Eagle Creek Fire in the Columbia Gorge that happened a few months earlier. We captured 360 video, standard video, audio interviews, and used aerial photography to create a photogrammetry model of the entire 75-square-mile burn area. Experience the Eagle Creek Fire like never before in this interactive AR/VR experience. Learn more at: www.oregonrealitylab.com The University of Oregon’s Immersive Media Research & Education LabImmersive media represents a spectrum of emerging storytelling platforms: augmented reality (AR), mixed reality (MR), and virtual reality (VR). Together, these extended reality (XR) platforms enable communicators to create interactive experiences where audiences participate rather than observe. The Oregon Reality (OR) Lab is a multidisciplinary teaching and research space where we approach these technologies as powerful communication tools and equip students with the skills to strategically and ethically leverage immersive storytelling for positive social impact.Based at the University of Oregon’s Portland campus, the lab supports courses, development, and research focused on human-centered immersive communication. Students learn to create immersive storytelling projects, from interactive 3D environments and 360-degree videos to branded AR and VR applications, while studying how these platforms help inform, persuade, and address social, environmental, and business challenges.
