Necessity is the Mother of Invention November 2012, Liney Guidry, had life saving surgery to remove the cancer contained in his bladder and a stoma was formed to expel waste through his abdomen. During his recovery, he struggled with the pouch change process, his inability to control an active stoma resulted in frustration, wasted supplies, loss of confidence in his appliance and he became a recluse. Refusing to live his life under these circumstances, he created a device that changed his life overnight. His invention allowed him to have complete control over an uncontrollable stoma and he regained his independence. We, his family, recognized the gap in ostomy care – how to capture output from an exposed stoma during a pouch change and set out to find a solid solution for the ostomy community. StomaGenie became the solution to this problem. It is a biodegradable cartridge that covers an exposed stoma, absorbs and contains waste allowing for a clean, simple pouch change. It is covered by Medicare and health insurance up to 30 cartridges per month. It is carried by major distributors such as Byram, Edgepark, 180 Medical, Comfort Medical and more.
