Our unit has been tailored to process biosolids with design features that avoid common challenges faced with dust (a regular issue with many biosolids carbonisation processes). Built into our unit is an extended retention chamber, that can achieve 980 degrees for two second in the gas phase, which ensures PFAS is destroyed within the char and gas phase. With over 25 years of experience working with gasification/pyrolysis projects and the majority of these involving human and animal biosolids we have significant understanding of what makes a project work and where the pitfalls can be. We can work with you to design a project that can suit your biosolids needs regardless of the size and our unit can work with a range of dryer styles. Biosolids are one of the most challenging feedstocks to process, driven by high drying energy requirements and significant dust generation. Many conventional gasification and pyrolysis technologies struggle to operate consistently under these conditions. IQ Energy’s systems are purpose-built to overcome these challenges through integrated thermal design and robust feed handling, enabling stable, self-sustaining operation in real-world environments. Our pyro-gasification systems combine controlled pyrolysis and gasification within a single engineered process to deliver efficient conversion and regulatory compliance. An integrated extended thermal oxidizer is designed to meet strict time and temperature requirements, ensuring effective destruction of PFAS in both the gas and solid phases—providing a clear and practical pathway for utilities and project developers. All systems are modular, scalable, and manufactured in Canada or the United States, allowing phased deployment to reduce capital risk and align with feedstock availability. This approach avoids stranded assets while enabling facilities to expand over time. IQ Energy is currently finalizing installation of its first commercial unit based on this modern design in Alberta, Canada, with a processing capacity of approximately 4,000 dry tonnes per annum (12 dry tonnes per day). A smaller unit (7 dry tonnes per day) has already been successfully piloted and sold to a third party, demonstrating both technical performance and market demand. IQ Energy also offers zero-oxygen pyrolysis systems tailored for carbon recovery applications, including the production of carbon materials such as granular activated carbon (GAC), where project objectives extend beyond disposal. When emerging contaminants, like PFAS, are present within a feedstock then an extended retention chamber (ERC) can be integrated into the gasification unit.
