We have over 30 years of experience working with law enforcement agencies, developing several applications that have revolutionized the way that eyewitness identifications are evidenced. Eyewitness identifications play an important role in our criminal justice system, both by helping officers and agents identify suspects during an investigation and by helping juries determine guilt at trial. It is therefore crucial that the procedures law enforcement officers follow when conducting those identifications ensure the accuracy and reliability of evidence elicited from eyewitnesses. Working alongside the University of Birmingham we have jointly developed an interactive lineup procedure that enables witnesses to interact with the images on screen and rotate the face left or right giving control of the viewing process to the witness. Witnesses have more control and can actively explore faces from different angles, matching how they saw the perpetrator. Academic research suggests that interactive lineups outperform traditional photo or video methods regardless of the witnesses original encoding viewpoint (front or profile). Real world witnesses see perpetrators from varying viewpoints and can adjust views to match their memory, aiding retrieval significantly.
