Georgia Ports Authority

The Port of Savannah ensures the continuous flow of containerized goods to and from global destinations, by way of 35 weekly containership services, direct interstate connections, and intermodal rail provided by CSX and Norfolk Southern. The third-busiest container gateway in the U.S., Savannah’s 1,500-acre facility is the nation’s largest single-operator container terminal. As the most westerly major port on the U.S. East Coast, Savannah provides shorter overland routes to inland markets. The Georgia Ports Authority has instituted an aggressive expansion plan to ensure cargo fluidity. Infrastructure projects will grow Savannah’s annual container yard capacity by more than 45 percent to 9.5 million TEUs by 2026. GPA is renovating Berth 1 at Garden City to accommodate big ships, and establishing two big ship berths at Savannah’s Ocean Terminal. These projects will double Savannah’s capacity to handle 16,000+ TEU vessels. To work the larger ships, GPA will add 16 new ship-to-shore cranes – four of which were delivered Feb. 9. The Authority’s Mason Mega Rail Terminal has boosted its rail lift capacity to 1 million containers per year, an increase of 30 percent. Additionally, the Port of Savannah’s Peak Capacity Project added 1.2 million TEUs of annual capacity at Garden City Terminal. Transitioning the 200-acre Ocean Terminal to a container-only facility and building the new 90-acre Garden City Terminal West will add 2.5 million TEUs of annual container yard capacity. Meanwhile, a new cross-dock warehouse slated to open in July will speed the transition of cargo from containers to over-the-road delivery trucks. | Georgia’s Ports in Savannah and Brunswick are strategic gateways, creating the most competitive supply chains in the nation with their level of operations, inland connectivity and supply chain ecosystem. Expanded refrigeration services on terminal are designed to improve and grow cold chains in world markets. These attributes combined with Georgia’s ranking as the top state to do business for 12 consecutive years create a strong business model for growth. The Port of Savannah is one of the best-connected ports in the U.S. to world markets with 39 ship calls a week, 42 doublestack trains per week and 14,000-16,000 truck gate moves daily. GPA has a self-financed $4.5 billion investment plan for the next ten years which will see five new big ship berths added in Savannah and a fourth berth in Brunswick to meet future growth. In the past decade, GPA has invested $3.2 billion in infrastructure improvements. As part of GPA’s community engagement efforts, $6 million is being donated to port communities to support a multi-year, local workforce housing initiative.
