The University of Maryland’s joint research enterprise received $1.3 billion in research awards in FY2025 and was ranked 9th among all public U.S. research institution sin the National Science Foundation’s FY2024 Higher Education Research and Development survey. Each year, UMB conducts over $70 million in corporate-sponsored research annually and, at the present time, the University is working with more than 300 bioscience and pharmaceutical firms. UMB’s largest school, the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM), is known for pioneering new treatments in many areas of strength, which include transplant science, infectious disease, cancer care, and shock trauma. Other important areas of clinical strength include radiation oncology, focused ultrasound, orthopaedic trauma, population health, genomics, and cardiology. In FY2025, UMSOM received $514 million in research funding and was ranked 9th for Total Research Funding by the Association of American Medical College’s most recent ranking.
